Mock Neck vs Turtleneck vs Crewneck: What's the Difference?

by Traditions Collegiate Apparel on Aug 04, 2026

Three necklines, three very different sweatshirts. If you have ever ordered what you thought was a turtleneck and received something that sat two inches lower, or bought a crewneck when you actually wanted a bit more coverage, this is the guide that sorts it out.

The short answer

A crewneck has a flat ribbed band that sits at the base of your neck. A mock neck has a short collar, roughly one to two inches, that stands upright on its own. A turtleneck has a tall collar, four to six inches, that folds over on itself.

A mock neck is essentially a turtleneck with the fold removed. That single difference changes how the piece feels, how warm it is, and how often you actually reach for it.

Side by side

Style Collar height Folds over? Warmth Best for
Crewneck Flat ribbed band No Standard The classic campus look, layering under a jacket
Mock neck 1 to 2 inches, upright No Slightly warmer A cleaner, dressier look with no bulk
Turtleneck 4 to 6 inches, doubled Yes Warmest Cold weather, a more formal silhouette

Why people are switching to mock necks

Turtlenecks photograph well and then sit in the drawer. The reason is simple: a doubled collar traps heat right against your throat, and for a lot of people that crosses from cozy into restrictive within about an hour indoors.

A mock neck gives you the same finished, layered silhouette without that. The collar is cut to stand on its own without gripping. You get the visual benefit of a high neckline and none of the reasons people stop wearing turtlenecks.

There is a second reason, specific to collegiate mock necks: the raised collar frames chest embroidery instead of competing with it. On a crewneck, a large chest design and the neckline sit close together. On a mock neck, the collar creates separation, and the design reads cleaner.

When a crewneck is still the right call

Mock necks are not a replacement for crewnecks. They are a different tool.

  • Layering under an open jacket or vest. A crewneck disappears cleanly under anything. A mock collar is visible by design, which is sometimes what you want and sometimes not.
  • Wearing a collared shirt underneath. A crewneck gives a shirt collar room to sit naturally. A mock neck competes with it unless you let the shirt collar sit outside.
  • Warm weather. Less fabric at the neck means a crewneck breathes better in September.
  • The traditional look. If you want the sweatshirt your parents wore on campus, that is a crewneck.

How fabric weight changes the answer

Collar shape gets all the attention, but fabric weight decides whether a mock neck actually works. GSM, or grams per square meter, is the honest way to compare.

  • Under 260 gsm. Typical fast-fashion weight. A mock collar in this range goes limp within a few washes and stops standing up, which defeats the entire point of the style.
  • 300 to 350 gsm. Midweight. Enough structure to hold the collar, light enough to wear indoors. Our mock necks sit at 330 gsm.
  • Over 400 gsm. Heavyweight. Excellent structure, but genuinely warm, and a tall collar at this weight starts feeling like a turtleneck again.

If you are comparing mock necks across brands and only one lists a GSM figure, that is usually a signal in itself.

Getting the fit right

Mock necks are usually cut more relaxed than crewnecks, which means sizing does not always carry across from your usual sweatshirt size.

The most reliable method takes about a minute. Lay a sweatshirt you already own and like flat, measure it across the chest from armpit to armpit, and match that number against the brand's chest measurement. Body measurements are guesswork; garment measurements are not.

Worth knowing if you are shopping ours: we make two mock neck fits, and they size differently. The Gameday runs true to size. The Sideline runs deliberately large and should be sized down for the intended oversized drape. The difference is mostly in length, not chest, which is what creates the longer silhouette. Full numbers are on our size chart.

Making it last

The failure point on a cheap mock neck is always the collar. It goes soft, stops standing, and the piece starts reading like a stretched-out crewneck. Three habits prevent that:

  1. Wash cold. Heat is what breaks down the collar's structure and shortens the life of embroidery.
  2. Hang dry. A machine dryer is the single fastest way to lose collar shape.
  3. Turn it inside out first. This protects stitched designs from abrasion against the drum.

So which should you buy?

Buy a crewneck if you want the classic campus sweatshirt, plan to layer it under things, or run warm.

Buy a mock neck if you like how turtlenecks look but never actually wear them, want something that reads a little more put-together without any extra effort, or want the chest design to stand on its own.

Buy a turtleneck if you genuinely want maximum warmth and the more formal line it creates.

Most people who try a well-made mock neck end up owning several, because it covers more situations than either of the other two. Ours are officially licensed for over 100 universities, fully embroidered rather than printed, and cut in 330 gsm cotton. You can browse them by school in the mock neck collection, or see everything we make in crewnecks, hoodies, quarter zips, and knit sweaters.
